German haulage company VVilli Betz is continuing its UK expansion and searching for a site near Burton on Tent. Guy Sheppard reports.

EUROPEAN TRANSPORT giant Willi Bet7 is poised to strengthen its foothold in the UK by opening a purpose-built distribution depot in Staffordshire.

Since last summer the company has been recruiting scores of drivers to deliver parts to the Toyota car plant at Burnaston near Derby. Now it is understood to be looking for its own site near Burton on Trent to service the contract.

Betz currently rents premises from South Staffordshire Freight Services at Shenstone, near Lichfield. It also has a depot in Newport Pagnell, Bucks.

Asked about the firm's plans. UK director Hans Wassermeyer would only say; It depends on matters we can't discuss." In the past, union leaders have accused the company of recruiting low-paid drivers from outside the European Union. But under the Toyota contract, which involves delivering to the manufacturer's on-site support partner 'Bansfreight. Betz has had to recruit drivers based in the UK (CM 21 July 2005). When the recruitment programme began. the company needed up to 80 drivers at Shenstone: it is now understood to be short of about 10 drivers there.
