Watching the pickets during the lorry drivers' strike. I fell to pondering the qualities required by those who perform this selfless social service. Their philanthropic aim is to spread over the many the consequences of the folly and greed of the few.
So what characteristics does the ideal picket need? An allpervading sense of social justice? An overwhelming belief in the righteousness of his cause? A willingness to suffer deprivation for the good of others? Or are brutish stupidity and a readiness to put the boot in when oral intimidation fails, sufficient to sustain high endeavour?
