The Bridge Question in Shropshire.

"This conference feels very strongly that no restrictions whatever should be allowed by the Minister to be imposed on any bridge whatsoever, in any schedule, until the whole matter had been thoroughly explored and until the Minister was satisfied beyond all doubt that such bridges were definitely incapable of beating the loads in respect of which it was proposed the restrictions should apply." This resolution was passed by a conference, held last week, in connection with Shropshire Council Road and Bridges Committee, and referring to Section 30 (bridges clause) of the Road and Rail Traffic Act.

Certain members stressed the point that the schedule of bridges would result in a great deal of traffic being transferred to the secondary roads, which were neither suitable nor capable of dealing with it. It was ultimately agreed that a B20 technical sub-committee he appointed, to he composed of the county surveyor and technical experts from the National Traction Engine Association and the Road Haulage Association. Mr. Leonard Ross, secretary of the Shropshire Omnibus Association, Ltd., urged that a representative of the road passenger transport interests should be included, because the committee seemed to be devoting its attention solely to goods haulage. This was agreed to.

The sub-committee's duties are to report to the conference bridges on which it suggests owners should be requested to defer making restrictions and those where owners should be requested to increase the loads that are permissible. Durban Buys British .Trolleybuses.

For some time past Durban municipal authorities have been considering the introduction of trolleybuses, and they have now placed orders with two British concerns for the supply of 22 vehicles of this type. The contract has been equally divided between Leyland Motors, Ltd., and the Sunbeam Motor Car Co., Ltd., each of which is to supply 11 55-seater four-wheeled vehicles. We learn that all the vehicles will have Park Royal bodies.

It may be recalled that, last summer, Mr. 1. A. Bromley, general manager of the Durban Corporation Tramways, visited this country and inspected some of the principal trolleybcts undertakings. as well as the works of makers of frollev, bus chassis.
