Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

QUBSTANTIALLY fewer lorry thefts t,--; were reported in the Metropolitan Police district during the first nine months of this year, compared with the same period last year. This information has been given .by Scotland Yard to the Vehicles Security Committee of the Road Haulage Association. The figures are:— First Nine Months Percentage

Value £415,000 £330,000 20 Commenting on the figures, Mr. N. T. O'Reilly, chairman of the security committee, said this week:" At a time when most of the figures for crime are rising, it is encouraging to note the substantial drop in the figures for lorry thefts."

Mr. O'Reilly congratulated the police, and said that Dart of the credit should also go to vehicle operators and drivers who had taken the measures recommended by the committee. "Measures that have been taken include the fitting of warning or immobilizing devices on vehicles, the careful screening of drivers, and the distribution of leaflets offering a reward for information leading to a conviction," he said.

It was reasonable to assume, said Mr. O'Reilly, that the trend was national. Nearly two-thirds of the number of thefts reported in Britain took place in the Metropolitan area.

Some time ago the committee launched a competition to find an anti-theft device. The closing date for this is December 31, next. The R.H.A. has also offered rewards for information relating to the recovery of stolen vehicles or loads, and some payments have already been made as a result, A32
