WHILE most manufacturers are battening down the hatches, ERF has shown great courage in opening a new £1.5m engineering research and design centre at Middlewich. One of its purposes is to enable the company to meet EEC environmental safety standards, some of which smell faintly of caprice.

As Peter Foden, chairman and managing director, said at the official opening by Norman Fowler, Minister of Transport -We sometimes feel that the bureaucrats in Brussels are trying hard to justify their very existence without stopping to think of the unnecessary workload they are placing on our hard-pressed industry.
