The £100,000 station at Shrewsbury, on the Harlescott Industrial Estate, was designed by the Ministry of Public Building and Works. It comprises a test hall with ancillary accommodation (offices, technical library, staff rooms), a circulation track (a route linking the points used by vehicles being tested), a parking area, a test track, an artificial gradient for checking the holding power of parking brakes and a weighbridge.

The test hall is 160ft-long and 37ft-wide and has a test lane capable of handling up to 10,000 vehicles a year. A spare lane is also available for vehicles which cannot traverse a pit (three-wheelers and "four-inline") and for some re-tests and other vehicle examinations.
