Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE oil engine is now finding a ready use in all spheres of transport, its reliability, performance and economy of working having been responsible for this all-round advance. The weltknown concern of John Fowler and Co. (Leeds), Ltd., Leeds, has recently found a new use for its type of oil engine by installing it in a showman's road locomotive of entirely new deSign.

The machine is shown in an accompanying illustration, and is powered by a Fowler-Sanders six-cylindered oil engine, developing SO b.h.p. at 1,100 r.p.m. The drive is transmitted through a multi-plate clutch to a primary gearbox with three forward speeds and a reverse, and a secondary gearbox with two speeds, , giving six forward speeds and_two reverse. "

The hind wheels, which are of 6-ft. 9-in. diameter, are fitted with twin solid tyres, 18ins, wide, and under the back axle an improved spring gear, with a patent oil-bath mechanism, absorbs road shocks. The steel-disc front wheels, which a,w 3 ft. 6 ins. ,in diameter and 9 ins, wide, have single pneumatic tyres and are carried on a front axle of standard design with Ackermann-type steering of orthodox design.

The front springs are of the semielliptic pattern. Transmission brakes, operated by both hand and foot, and screw-operated hind-wheel shoe brakes are provided.

The electrical equipment consists of dynamo, motor and batteries for starting and lighting, and a Mather and Platt 110-volt 450 amp. dynamo directly coupled to the engine through an 'extension shaft and mounted on the main frame. A switchboard, with ammeter and voltmeter', is fitted inside the cab and a generator field regulator is also provided.

A roomy, totally enclosed cab, which provides adequate ventilation, gives good protection to the driver. Specially strengthened drawbars for heavy haulage work are fitted at each end of the main frame and a winding drum, with 75 yds. of steel-wire rope, is also a c.tandard fitting.

The overall length of the machine is 19 ft., and its overall width 7 'ft. 7 ins., the overall. height being 10 ft. 2 ins. The approximate weight in working order is l5-4 tons. The capacity of the main fuel tank is 200 gallons and of the service tank 40 gallons.
