Ni passenger transport in Madras is to spread over five years. According to Mr. Daniell Thomas, Minister of Transport, the Government is to take over all bus services in the moffusil (except the ghat routes and town services) in the five-year period beginning this year.

In the first year about 10 important districts will be selected and 20 per cent. of the permits held by operators will be taken over by the Government. In the second year, a further 20 per cent, of the permits in each of these 10 districts will be acquired and the scheme will be extended to certain new areas, where 40 per cent, of the permits will be taken over for a start. This process will continue until all districts have been covered.

The Government proposes to proceed. immediately with the nationalization of services on the ghat routes between Madura and Kodaikanal and Coimbalore and Ootaeamund, and the town services of Madura and Cohnbatore.

ROAD TRANSPORT HELPS NEW SCOTS INDUSTRIES

ROAD transport is allying itself with 1 14. the new light industries now being set up in the Owood, Carfin and Motherwell districts of Lanarkshire. The London Scottish Transport Co_ now has a large depot directly opposite • Carfin Trading Estate. This forms an important link with the Midlands and the south, and an average of 25 lorries leaves every night for Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and London.

At its depots at Leith. Larbere Alloa and Doune, the company has about 150 vehicles. Loads are picked up one day and, except in the case of London, are delivered in England the next day. Valuable loads are checked three times before the lorry leaves.
