THERE is a strong 'belief in official quarters that the biggest loss of paper occurs through housewives mixing their kitchen refuse or ashes with their waste paper, despite the fact, that such a procedure is now an offence. It is up to the head of every household, who, in most • eases, is the husband, to bring this fact to the notice of his wife, but anyone else noticing such waste would perform a public service by giving this warning.

REQUISITIO,NING OF LAID-UPCAR TYRES PROCEEDS A'SWERING a question by Mr. Rostron Duckworth the Minister of Supply stated in the House last week that the requisitioning of tyres of certain sizes from laid-up cars had just been completed in the Wokingham and Ascot areas of Berkshire and in the Postal districts of N.W.1, N.W.3, N.W.5, and N.W,8 of London. Sir Andrew Duncan added that similar action would shortly be taken in other areas in respect of the requisitioning of tyres.

SCOTTISH RATES SCHEDULES FIXED WE are advised by the Scottish W Carriers and Haulage Contractors' Association that the rates sub-committee of the Road and Rail Central Conference VI Southern Scotland has now agreed upon a schedule of rates for the carriage of certain classes of goods between Glasgow and Stirling, rates for

smalls " traffic having previously been agreed Upon by the operators concerned. Thus,the schedules for this particular stream of traffic are now complete.
