DEPARTMENTAL STORES BIG SAVING 'BY POOLING

AT a meeting of the comMittee of management of the Glasgow Departmental' Stores Delivery Pool, last week, a'report on the savings which have been effected by the co-ordination of Glasgow stores' transport was given by Councillor T. R. Patterson, chairman of the Scottish' Retail Drapers' Association. Although the Pool was formed only a year ago, Mr. Patterson said that the amount of petrol now used in delivery work showed a reduction of 92 per cent. on pie-war consumption. He stated also that 86 per cent, of the vehicleshad been laid up or withdrawn for more essential work, and, apart from internal despatch, 84 per cent, of the transport drivers and vanmen had been released.

These excellent figures, he said, were the result of an all-out effort to achieve economy on the part of the various concerns forming the Pool, backed by the willing collaboration of the public to carry home all portable purchases.

AMONG plans approved, in principle by Newcastle-on-Tyne City Council is one for the building of another Tyne ,bridge between St. Anthony's, Newcastle, and Heworth. This plan was mooted more than 10 years ago.

U.A.S. PLANNING BUS STATION FOR BLYTH

THE authority of the Ministry of Health is being sought by Blyt'h (Northumberland) Corporation for the sale . to United Automobile Services, Ltd., of an area of land known as Post Office Square, which it is proposed to lay out as a bus station. The square is, at present, used as an ornamental garden and for some years the roads surrounding it have been used as bus stops.

ROAD FUND NOT CONTRIBUTING TO TREASURY I N the House of Commons last week Mr. Thorne asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what amount of money had been paid over to the Treasury out of the Road Fund for the year 1942-43.

Sir Kingsley Wood replied that Mr. Thorne appeared to have overlooked the change made in 1936, under which the Road Fund had been "led," since April 1, 1937, with such grants from voted moneys as it required for the purpose of meeting its expenditure, and that no question of the Fund paying over money to the Treasury arose under the arrangements then introduced.
