Items of News Intended to Stimulate the Interest ot British Makers in Overseas Markets.

British Buses to the Fore in Brazil. ACCORDING to a recent report Rio de Janeiro, with a population of 3,700,000 inhabitants, is well served by . motorbuses, 309 vehicles being in operation over 36 routes covering a total distance of about 234 miles. Of the total vehicle S it is satisfactory to learn that Great Britain is at the head of the list with 121 Guy buses, the United States being ,credited with 101 buses, Italy with 49, Germany with 30 and France with eight.

There are 16 conceisas running motorbuses in Rio, the principal undertakingS being the Itip de Janeiro Tramway, Light and Power Co., with 148 vehicles, and the Ernpreza Nacional Auto Viacao, with 42 buses. It is considered that many of the small concerns will gradually give way to the larger undertakings.

Farm Tractors in Russia.

RUSSIA. is the third largest market

for American agricultural tractors, no fewer than 4,593 wheel-typo machines, valued at £571,470, having been exported last year to that country from the United States, a decrease of about 500 in number but an increase of 1150,000 in value, as compared with the previous year. There was also an advance in the shipments to Russia of American tractors of the track-laying type—from only 14 (18,010) in 1927 to 477 (£214,490) last year.

India's Imports of Commercial Motors.

IN the nine months, April-December, 1928, India imported 9,940 commercial motor chassis, buses and lorries ,(as against 6,412 in the corresponding months of 1927), and the average landed value per vehicle was £113. Of these, 8,358 were chassis and 1,582 were complete vehicles.

Out of the total imports the British e46 share was only 316 units (against 320 last year), and the average value per unit was £274, just £70 less than in 1927. , The material advance which was made in Britain's exports to India between 1923 and 1927 has given place to a slight set-back in 1928.

Imports from Canada, however, have risen from 3,015 units in April-December, 1927, to 4,779 in the same period of 1928, the average value per unit remaining almost stationary at about £84, an astonishingly low figure.

America shipped 2,824 commercial motors to India in April-December, 1927, and 4,716'111 the same months of 1928, the average values. per vehicle in the two years being £115 and £123 respectively.

A Motor Census in Ceylon.

ACCORDING to a Government report, there were in use on December 31st last in Ceylon 11,228 motorcars, 1,431 motorcabs, 2,314 motorbuses, 2,338 lorries and vans, 21 tractors and 101 trailers.

Imports into British Malaya, THE Imperial Trade Correspondent at Singapore reports that during 1928 1,540 commercial-motor vehicles were imported into British Malaya.

A Vulcan Repeat Order from Hong Hong. '

Some time ago the Vulcan Motor and Engineering Co. (1906,) Ltd., supplied 39 buses to Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels' Ltd., for operation in Hong Kong City. A repeat order has just been cabled for three Vulcan Duke and three Vulcan Prince models.

Tenders Invited for Turkey.

THE Ministry of National Defence of the Turkish Government has written to local motor-agency houses inviting them to submit tenders for motor lorries (including six-wheelers and track-laying vehicles) of 2-tons and 2itons capacity. Tenders must be delivered by April 30th and lorries must be available for trial in Angora on May 15th. British makers desirous of submitting offers may obtain further information from the Department of Overseas Trade, 35, Old Queen Street, London, SAV.1.

Sonic American Automobile Figures.

IT is estimated that 4,630,000 motor vehicles were produced in the United States in 1928. The exports were about 810,000 and the imports 510 vehicles. Of the total output 586,000 were commercial motors.

Canada Starts the Year Weil.

THE value of Canada's total exports of motor vehicles during January was almost double the amount for January, 1928, the figures being $3,816,722 and 81,916,950 respectively.

British West Indies Figures.
