Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

mIRE inflation is an every-day

operation in most garages. • and workshops, and spray painting is another task which often has to be tackled and for whiclt efficient plant is required. Hitherto difficulty has been experienced in combining the compressors for the two duties in the form of a unit which is reasonably small and inexpensive to operate.

B.E.N. Patents, Ltd., 92, Tottenham Court Road, London, W.1, has been able to effect this by making use of a. spray gun which requires about half the volume of air normally con

sumed. Another • helpful factor is brought about by arranging the compressor system so that the motor starts the pump against atmospheric pressure only, not against the full pressure in the tank; thus a small motor is feasible.

Channel steel is employed for the trolley chassis. On the. platform are fixed the single-cylinclered flat-valve-type compressor, riveted steel 'receiver (this is tested tO 300 lb. and is insurable), the automatic control and the h.p. electric motor. At the compressor end, of the trolley is a structure carrying the pusher bar, air purifier and spray gun with its attendant hose.

Between the pump and receiver is a non-return valve. The automatic

control, which can be adjusted, to suit requirements, normally cuts in the compressor when the pressure falls to 80 lb. per sq. inch. and cuts out at 120 lb. per Sq. inch. By means of a bleeder tube, air remaining in the inlet pipe of the receiver is allowed to escape when the pump stops. When the motor again starts work the supply pipe is only at atmospheric pressure ; thus it is not overtaxed. Two. outlet cocks are provided on the receiver ; one

is for the spray-painting line, the other for the tyre-inflation hose.

Pressure for thespray gun can be regulated by the purifier, say, to 50 lb. per sq. in. for Aller and to 35 lb. per sq. in. for cellulose. For tyre inflation the full 120 lb. or higher pressure can be used.

Guns using 2 cubic ft., 3i cubic ft. or 5 cubic ft. of air per minute can be supplied. In the ease of the medium size a 5-in, fan-shaped spray is obtainable; a rounfl spray can be arranged in the matter of a moment or so. A siphon or pressure container can be supplied. Larger outfits allow the use of two guns; these can he portable or fixed as desired.

The dual air unit with tyre inflation hose costs £38 10s. When a spray gun and container are U-dded (31 cubic ft. type) the price is £45 2s. 6d, A wide range of accessories can be had to suit various requirements.

Another item of equipment for workshops, garages or factories is a polishing machine which can be of the suspended or portable pattern. In the latter ease dual pulleys are used for the belt, giving four speeds. Both types employ flexible hose with armoured ends and a right-angle, ball-bearing head which can .carry a wide range of mops, drill chucks, roughers and rotary files. This tool is finding a ready application in shops where cellulose painting is in operation. For body polishing and flatting it can expedite the work to an appreciable extent. '
