Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Channel ferry giants P&O and Sealink are said to be interested in buying Caledonian MacBrayne, the state-owned Scottish West Coast ferry operator, which is due to be sold by the Government.

CalMac, which was part of the now-privatised Scottish Transport Group, has a monopoly of freight and passenger services to the Scottish west coast islands. P&O already runs ships to the Shetlands and Orkney.

This development has been attacked by Labour's Scottish transport spokesmanJohn Home Robertson, who says that the company must stay in public ownership.
