INTERNATIONAL hauliers face additional annual charges ranging up to almost ELMO if they use Swiss roads from next January following a national referendum held earlier this year.

The scale of charges, which has now been published, states that an annual levy of between 500 and 3,000 Swiss francs (depending on the category of vehicle and weight) will be payable by all motor vehicles and trailers — Swiss or foreign registered — weighing over 3.5 tonnes for the use of roads open to general traffic (and not just motorways).

Last-minute moves in the EEC — whose hauliers make extensive use of Switzerland as a transit country — are not likely to affect the decision.
