Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

eight-wheel tipper.

ew grp tanker

A NEW eight-wheeler aimed specifically at the tipper market has been introduced by DAF.

Designated the FAD 2305 DHU, the new DAF features the same turbocharged and charge-cooled engine used in the successful 2300 tractive unit. This is the DHU 825, which produces 169kW (230bhp) at 2,400rpm with a maximum torque rating of 775Nm (5721bft) at 1,600rpm. This increases the power over its predecessor but, more important for tipper operation, it increases the torque figure by nine per cent.

Like the DAF six-wheeler announced a few weeks ago, .the new eight-wheeler is fitted with a ZF synchromesh gearbox as standard, in this case the nine-speed ZF 55-9, which replaces the constantmesh Fuller of the original eight-wheeler.

Crawler gear is 13 to 1 which, in conjunction with the standard 5.14 axle ratio, gives the DAF a restart capability of 1 in 4.5 and a maximum road speed of 89km/h (56rr_ph). With the optional 5.72 axle, the road speed is restricted to 80km /h (50mph) and the maximum gradient improved to a 1 in 4 capability. The clutch is a single dry plate type with a diameter of 380mm (15in).

One wheelbase is available for the DAF at 5.65m (18ft 6in) (mid bogie) which gives a usable frame length of 6.86m (22ft 6in). The unladen weight is 8.25 tonnes (8tons 2cwt) which includes five gallons of fuel, oil, water, tools, spare wheel and carrier.

DAF claims a turning circle between kerbs of 19m (62ft 6in). The steering is powerassisted by means of a twinlinked-ram system.

At the back, the DAF 2255T double-drive bogie is specified. This is a two-spring unit using the springs to locate the axles, eliminating the need for radius rods. The bogie has a design capacity of 20 tons which is limited to 18.5 tons in the UK by virtue of the 1.35m (4ft 5in) axle spread. The front ax] capacity is 6.4 tons.

The standard fuel tan capacity is 200 litres (44 ga ions) with an optional secon tank of a similar volume. Tankers is a new cornointly owned by Interrn oldings Ltd and J & J S Ltd. formed to build se I petrol tankers.

ts nker uses a new techtue n which two skins are ride together by a layer of .sed cellular polyester foam.

e o ter skin is made from oulds, one to form the ver body section and the ier a caping section. The nt said to be five times on er than required by preled loadings. Internally, in/id al containers are me sed in polyester foam tss s of irregular shape :ke and bonded together in fashion that there is no ec contact between the nta ner and outer skin.

in a collision, any high point di would be dispersed by e f am layer over a wide ea efore reaching the inner nk, reducing risk of spil lage. The foam also acts as insulation against fire.

The most important point 'about this design is that it provides for a capacity of 5,000 litres (6,600 gal), the maximum .allowed, with a lower overall centre of gravity by 330mm (13in) than that of a conven tional tanker, which improves overall stability.

All ancillary equipment is housed within the body so there are no dangerous protrusions.

The rear bogie sub-frame supports a rear under-run crash bar beneath the rear panel which extends down to within 380mm (15in) of the ground.

Flat sides allow a full-width recessed walkway, faced in non-slip aluminium oxide grit along the top of the vehicle.

Static electricity risks have been minimized by in improved ring main earthing circuit connecting all the metal fittings used and the anti-static gel cast on the outer skin.

Shell Oil has purchased the first pre-production model which they have operated on black oil transport since March. Further assessment will continue until the end of 1979 and within the next two weeks the tanker is expected to be given the go-ahead by the Health and Safety Executive to carry petroleum spirit.

M and G Tankers expect to produce up to 150 units in the first year at its new plant in Scunthorpe.

The Health and Safety Executive has already completed a total flame envelopment comparison where the grp model survived for 16 minutes, four times longer than either of the steel or aluminium tanks tested.

Purchase price is expected to be in the regionof £20,000.
