IN THE first year of operating a drawbar combination in place of an articulated outfit, Barber (DAF) Ltd, a transport company based at Mitcham , Junction, Croydon, claims to have saved over £1,000.
Over a 12-month period, the vehicle covered about 1501000 miles transporting highvolume low-weight goods but used one less set of tyres with the drawbar outfit because scrubbing and kerbing had been eliminated.
A less efficient interchange of trailers is not a problem for this operation.
Less tyre scrub is attributed to the position of the VGB drawbar A-frame and truck coupling, eliminating the tandem axle as used on a semitrailer.
