e are saddened to learn of the recent death of John Darker who wrote for CM full time from 1965 to 1979 and continued for some years after leaving to write a respected column, 'The Darker Side of Transport' as well as freelancing for CMs sister paper, Motor Transport.

John had originally trained as an aircraft engineer and later joined BRS as a clerk.

While there a job ad for CM caught his eye: 'Can you write about transport?'. He decided he could and was appointed by then editor, Alan Havard.

As well as being a conscientious CM journalist, with a particular interest in transport training, John was also a keen trade unionist and was Father of the Chapel (shop steward) for a number of years. He also contributed a pamphlet to the socialist Fabian Society on transport issues.

John is survived by his wife Mary, children Julian, Nicholas, David and Sally and nine grandchildren. Many at CM continue to remember him with affection.
