SHORTLY after the appointmei last week of Nicholas Ridley the new Secretary of State fi Transport, there was promotic too for Lynda Chalker.
Previously Under Secrete (with David Mitchell), M Chalker has been upgraded Minister of State for Transport, post that had been left vacant. addition to being a person promotion for Mrs Chalker (N, for Wallasey) this is seen with the Department of Transport a recognition of the extra re ponsibilities it gained last Jui in the shape of aviatio shipping and marine.
The division of duties betwe, Mrs Chalker and Mr Mitchell (II for Hampshire North West) w previously decided by Tom Kul and have been reviewed by r cholas Ridley. Before, Mrs Cha er's responsibilities includ roads, the bus industry, loi public transport, driver al vehicle licensing, road saff and vehicle standards.
Now, she has been given t responsibility for handling t work involved in setting up Lc don Regional Transport, and I Ridley said that Mrs Chall would also deal with the wc arising from the abolition of t metropolitan county councils.
