NEW REGULATIONS imposed on freight traffic are threatening to freeze traffic developed over the years to the Middle East.

That was the warning from the International Road Transport Union this week.

Standards demanded by Norway, Switzerland and Germany came in for criticism as did "meddlesome" inspections by police border patrols in Spain in the report compiled by the IRU at a meeting in Geneva.

The IRU also hit at Middle East countries levying taxes on vehicles passing through the countries. Delegates to the IRU Council of Direction also attacked proposals in Austria for the same kind of transit .taxes.

"Such a tax would be gravely prejudicial to international goods transport by road," said the IRU, "it would distort the conditions of competition and exert an impact on competition in international trade," they said.

The council passed a .resolution that reminded Austria that trade was necessary to improve people's standards of living.
