Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Will biises have been superseded by the end of the century as some more imaginative people have suggested? Not according to Edward W. A. Butcher, who is director of Transport Management Services, writing in The People's Carriage, a book being published soon to commemorate the centenary of the Bristol Omnibus Co Ltd. "It has taken 20 years to introduce the jet aircraft, containers and the advanced passenger train, and it will not take any less time to develop and introduce the next generation of public transport systems," he says.

What will buses coming into service in 1984 look like? The advanced passenger bus must be reliable, quiet, cause negligible pollution and be as comfortable as today's cars, he says. Certainly. in 10 years' time it would be possible to monitor continuously and assess services so accurately that bus passengers would be able to respond more quickly to changing passenger needs. County councils, their biggest customers, would be able to compare the performances of bus companies and other forms of transport — "but not, I hope. like `Big Brother'," he adds.

The People's Carriage, available to the public. next month, will cost £3.75.
