Our Colombo correspondent informs us that interesting figures regarding motor vehicles in Ceylon have just been supplied by the Director of Statistics. The number of motor lorries imported in 1926 was 948, valued at Rs.2,597,550. This shows a slight decrease when compared with 1,096 lorries, valued at Rs.3,176,435, imported in 1925. The United States of America headed the list again with 476 lorries, valued at Rs.1,660,311—a decrease of 140 lorries as compared with the figures of 1925—whilst 343 lorries

B30 came from Canada, valued at Its.396,354, and 97 from the United Kingdom, valued at Rs.460,715. The imports from the other countries were : France, 22; Germany, 10; and Italy, 9.

The total number of motor vehicles in the island in 1918 was 8,773. The number rose to 11,773 in 1925 and to 14,947 on December 31st, 1926. During the year 1924 new motor vehicles were registered at the rate of 189 a month; in the year 1925 the number rose to 274 a month, and in 1926 to 351. The 14,947 motor vehicles in the island on December 31st, 1926, were registered as follows :-7,249 motorcars for private use, 1,350 motorcars for hire for the conveyance of passengers; 2,141 motorbuses and lorries for hire for the conveyance of passengers; 1,390 lorries for the transport of goods and for hire ; 2.812 motorcycles.

The greatest increase has been in the registration of buses and lorries. Motorbuses are now running ht every district in the island and are very popular.
