FIDUS CONTROLS Ltd has launched a diesel/water emulsifier which can be fitted to the engine of any diesel powered vehicle.
The device is claimed to reduce fuel consumption as well as engine noise and nitrous oxide emissions.
Standard diesel fuel is taken from the vehicle tank in the usual way. After the fuel filter stage, water is fed into the system, being metered to give the correct percentage of fuel to suit the engine rating.
The volume of water is constant, thus at idle the water content would be as high as 15 per cent, but reduced to two per cent at full load.
Ordinary tap water is used, with a filter fitted between the water tank and the fuel line to remove impurities.
Fidus, of Middlefield Industrial Estate, Heddon Way, South Shields, claims that the device can be fitted in approximately two hours, using the appropriate kit, at a cost of £600.
Price varies
This price varies according to the particular fuel injection system involved, and in most cases will be less than the figures quoted.
As far as warranty is concerned, engine manufacturers are conducting independent trials, but Fidus claims no particular worries in this area.
The heart of the system is the emulsifier unit where a diesel/water emulsion is created using both venturi and shear action.
