• Econofreight United Transport has won the 1989 heavy haulage industry's top international awards, sponsored by the SCRA (Specialised Carriers and Rigging Association).
Managing director Tom Llewellyn has picked up the "Hauling job of the year" and the "Moving job of the year" for successfully completing complex contracts with Statoil (the Norwegian state oil company) and BP's gas gathering terminal at Wytch Farm in Dorset respectively.
The Norwegian Statoil contract at Mongstad involved shifting several modules for offshore drilling platforms, the heaviest of which weighed 950
tonnes. Seven Volvo and two Mercedes-Benz heavy-haulage tractive units were used with a combined power output of 2,570kW (3,500hp).
The moving job went to a 385km (240 mile) Econofreight contract with BP to shift 12 long gas storage vessels from Babcock Robey in the West Midlands to Wytch Farm in Dorset.
