Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ALL classes of motor-vehicle user will be interested in the new ferry service which was recently inaugurated. between North and South Queensferry, at the Forth 'Bridge. Previously, the service was maintained by a steamdriven paddle boat, running a service from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m., with a restricted service on Sundays and in the winter.

The operation of the service has been taken over by agreement with the London and North Eastern Railway Co. by William Denny and Brothers, Ltd., of Dumbarton, which has constructed two boats of special design. In order to provide maximum deck area for the transport of motor vehicles, the method of propulsion chosen was Diesel-electric, driving paddles through chains, and this enables over 30 averaged-sized vehicles to be carried at a time.

On account of the construction of the piers, it was not found possible to provide end-loading vessels, but to render side loading as simple and effective as possible, two features of special interest were incorporated.

There is an electrically operated gangway on each side, which is divided into two sections, giving an overall width of 15-ft.

Each section of the gangway is composed of steel fingers, 1 ft. wide, with the requisite amount of play between each to let the gangway, as a whole, fall flat on the pier, whatever the gradient.

To facilitate parking on board the vessels, particularly in the case of vehicles with long wheelbases, an elec-trically operated turntable has been installed in a convenient position opposite the gangways.

A half-hourly service is provided, commencing at North Queensferry at 7.30 a.m., and finishing at 11 p.m., the sailings from South Queensferry being half an hour later in each case. During one month in winter—probably February—a service at longer intervals will, however, be provided by one boat while the other is undergoing an annual overhaul.

There has been a substantial reduction in fares, as is indicated by the following schedule of old and new charges :—

The average time occupied on the passage is 12 minutes, and, by using the ferry, a considerable mileage is saved in the journey from Edinburgh to Dunfermline, Perth, Dundee, Kinross and all points east thereof. Further particulars of the service may be obtained from Mr. James A. Latta, Queensferry Passage, South Queensferry.
