Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The latest figures from the Vehicle Inspectorate show that 5743 trucks were recalled for various defects in the first six months of 1999—fewer than half the 13,925 recalled in the same period last year.

The marques involved were ERF, Leyland DK MAN, Scania and Volvo.

Faults ranged from injector units leaking fuel into the engine lubrication system on Volvo FH12s and EL125, to the failure of the steering wheel adjustment system on ERFs.

Scania recalled 2,289 4-Series units after fires started on production lines because starter motor cables had been covered with conductive material; MAN had a problem with welds on E2000 chassis cross-members.

Leyland Oaf issued seven recall notes including one for 238 55-Series trucks fitted with bolts of incorrect quality which could have led to front brake discs separating from the hubs.

The number of vans recalled in the first half of the year fell from 3,545 to 573.
