• A claim for a substantial pay increase has been lodged for Scotland's municipal busmen. It will be discussed at the annual conference of the Scottish passenger services group of the TGWU in Glasgow.

Last month, the municipal busmen received a 10 per cent increase through an interim arbitration award made by Prof Hugh Clegg, of Warwick University, on a TGWU claim for a 15 per cent shift allowance.

It gave increases of between £1.82 and £2.15 a week and led to similar 10 per cent shift allowance payments being granted to 100,000 provincial company busmen. Now the union has lodged a substantial cost-ofliving claim together with demands for improved service and shift payments.

The current municipal pay deal expires at the end of the year. The new claim by the busmen will be subject to the Government's post-freeze policy. Coming so soon after the arbitration award it may also be caught by the Government's insistence that there should be at least 12 months between pay deals.

The shift allowance is regarded by the union as an important new principle established in the payment of bus workers — something for which they have looked for a number of years.
