ABERDONIANS TO PAY MORE FOR THEIR RIDES?

A BOLITION of the penny fare by f't increasing the minimum charge to Id. and a rise in the present lid. fare to 2d. has been recommended by Aberdeen Corporation transport -committee. Child's present -id. and ld. fares, to cover the new lid. and 2d. stages, will be continued, and there will be no increase on the higher fares.

It is also proposed that the transport department's parcel delivery charges be increased from 2d. to 3d. for 7 lb., and from 3d. to 4d. for 14 lb. New fares and parcel charges, for which approval has to be obtained, will come into operation on November 1, if upheld.

Councillor Collins, convener, told the transport committee that in the estimates for 194748 it had been calculated that if the present fares were maintained there would be a loss on the tramcar service of £38,506 and on the bus service of £18,806. "That is due to the increased cost of operation —increased wages, improved conditions for employees, and increased cost of materials," he said.

"The department is faced with heavy capital expenditure on new vehicles, tramcar and bus accommodation, and plant to serve the needs of new housing areas. This will mean a substantial increase annually on interest and sinking fund charges."

OVERSEAS LEYLAND HAS SPLENDID RECORD

ALEYLAND coach which was recently built for Henri Petit, of Brussels, has been touring continually on the Continent from June 20 until August, returning to its base in Brussels only three times, when routine servicing was carried out during the night ready for a fresh, start the following morning.

Some of the tours have been undertaken for Messrs. Fourways Travel A26 Agency, of London, and have included Switzerland, Italy and Spain. Laden with 28 passengers and a large amount of luggage, this Leyland coach has covered about 300 miles a day and has climbed with ease some of the most difficult passes in Europe in a heatwave with temperatures varying between 104 degrees and 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

The 100 b.h.p. Leyland oil engine also attracted admiration from owners of other coaches for its low fuel consumption. In the mountainous areas, the consumption averaged m.p.g., whilst 14 to 15 m.p.g. was obtained in the comparatively level districts.

BRADFORD FARES RISE DESPITE OBJECTIONS

A LL Bradford Corporation's prt‘

posals for increases in fares on itg bus, trolleybus and tramcar services, on the ground of increases in costs, have received Ministry of Transport sanction, notwithstanding the objections which Brighouse Corporation and Shipley Urban District Council put forward against proposals concerning their areas. The undertaking's benefit from the extra revenue will be considerably reduced, however, by the increase in expenditure since the applications were made over a year ago.

The proposals now sanctioned provide for the increasing of penny fares to 1 fel., 24d. fares to 3d., longerdistance 3d, fares to 4d., 31d. fares to 4d., and 4d. and 41d. fares to 5d.
