Tougher Tyres Forecast

TWO types of synthetic rubber known as Ameripol SN and Ameripol CB are to be offered shortly in this' country by Durham Raw Materials, Ltd., 1-4 Great Tower Street, London, E.C.3, when Goodrich-Gulf Chemicals Inc., Ohio, U.S.A., begin full-scale production of the materials.

Initially, both synthetic rubbers are expected to -be used for the construction of heavy-duty tyres. reducing the present natural rubber content by54-100 per cent. The materials are stated to have abrasion-resistant qualities which suggest that tyres incorporating them would wear better than 'conventional covers.

Easier Stoving

A WATER-SOLUBLE resin for stoving 1-1 primers has been developed by British Resin Products, Ltd., Devonshire House, Piccadilly, London, W.I. It is known as Epok A.1700, resin and is said to have a performance comparable to conventional primer resins whilst providing several advantages.

It contains water only, in place of organic solvents. This eliminates any fire hazard and means that it can be thinned with • water. Primer, 'coats incorporating the Epok resin are flexible and have good humidity and salt corrosion resistance.

Stirring it Up . .

THE C. and P. Development Co. (London); Ltd., manufacturers of the Rust-Anode cold-galvanizing compound described in The Commercial Motor for March 25. have pointed out that the material still needs some stirring before use in spite of the anti-settlement -agent now incorporated.

One-pint Pump FOR replenishing the oil in gearboxes, axles, and other awkwardly situated components, Step Industrial Equipment, Ltd., Lower King's Road, Berkhamsted, Reds, offer the Wanner 328 oil pump.

The cylinder of the syringe-type pump holds 1 pint. To fill it, oil is drawn up into the cylinder through the flexible „ delivery pipe by suction. The pump is priced at fl 2s. 6d. Cheaper Cutting THE Bantam 2 oxygen plate-cutting machine manufactured by British Oxygen Gases, Ltd., Spencer House, St. James's, London, S.W.I, has been reduced in price. It now costs £59.

The machine weighs only 23 lb., including the cutter, and is designed for cutting straight lines and circles or for free-cutting curves when steered by hand. It will tackle mild steel up to 2 in. thick in circles at diameters from 3 in. to 3 ft. 9 in.

Pad Files rIRCULAR-SECTION blades with cir

cumferential teeth which will fit a normal coping saw frame are manufactured by Dafiles, Ltd., 37 Sheen Road, Richmond, Surrey. A coping saw fitted with this file-like blade is particularly suited for profiling work and will cut materials ranging from wood to steel.

Police Tips A BOOKLET entitled " Roadcraft," ri published by the .Stationery Office at 3s. 6d., is of interest to the competent

driver as well as the trainee. It is basically the driving manual used by the Metropolitan Police Driving School, which is now being adopted by other • police and private schools.

Pocket Saw THE Steadfast pad saw consists of two saw blades and a knife-edged cutter contained in a plastics handle. The blades fold into the handle, pivoting on a bolt fitted with a butterfly nut. For use, any blade can be swung out and locked in the working position.

The tool costs 6s. and is manufactured by L Stead and Co.. Ltd., Manor Works, Cricket Inn Road, Sheffield, 2. A set of replacement blades is priced at 3s. One of the blades has coarse teeth for cutting soft materials whilst the other is fine-toothed for hard materials. The saw is supplied in a plastics wallet.

The offset, semi-pistol grip handle fitted to the latest ratchet screwdriver produced by J. Stead and Co., is said to provide increased leverage and to be more comfortable to hold. The screwdrLyer has a 6-in.-long, chromium-plated, 7hrome vanadium blade.

TREE on request from Henry Wiggin 1. and Co., Ltd., Thames House, Millbank, London, S.W.1, is a new edition of the booklet, " Welding. Brazing and Soldering of Wiggin High-Nickel Alloys." It is illustrated with microphotographs of welds and includes sections on welding dissimilar metals and five welding processes.

BY adopting a cold-forging process for the manufacture of a new range of box sockets, Garringtons, Ltd., Bromsgrove, Worcs, state that a reduction in retail price has been achieved without loss of quality. The sockets are available in Whitworth and Universal sizes in sixpiece, 10-piece and 21-piece sets.
