FARE and freight increases by the British Tr an spor t Commission announced last week and due to start coming into effect next month, will bring in Eqm. in extra revenue, next year, plus E21rn. from London Transport fare increases.
Some freight charges on British Railways will be raised on May 15 by 10 per cent, for loads up to 3 cwt., with lower percentage increases up to 5 cwt. "Minor adjustments" are to be made for greater weights. 12?il fares are to increase by id. per mile from June, and season tickets between 4 per cent, and 14 per cent. next month.
The overall effect of the increases is expected to benefit road transport generally and passenger services in particular at a time when most bus operators are facing an economic crisis due to wage awards, granted or being negotiated.
