BIG C.M.U.A. MEETINGS ON WAGES BILL.

An important mass-meeting of A-, Band C-licence operators is being held by the C.M.U.A. London and Home Counties Division, at Caxton Hall, Westminster, next Thursday, May 5, at 7 p.m. The object is to discuss in detail the Road Haulage Wages Bill. The chair will be taken by Mr. Frank F. Fowler, and amongst the speakers will be Messrs. W, A. \Vinson and J. L. Kinder. Special motor coaches will be available to pick up members and nonmembers in various parts of London. Further details can be obtained from Mr. H. G. Sweetland, Chief Divisional Organizer, Commercial Motor Users Association, 50, Charing Cross, London, S.W.I.

C.M.U.A. Onslaught on Railways.

The London and Home Counties Division of the C.M.U.A. has lodged objections, on behalf of its members, to the application of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Co., Ltd., contained in Applications and Decisions, No. 119 (March 30) of the Metropolitan Area, to increase the number of its vehicles at Boxmoor, Harpenden, Harrow, Wembley and various places in London: Tamar Bridge and National Defence.

Under the auspices of the British Road Federation, Mr. R. NV. Sewill addressed East Willesden Rotary Club. last Tuesday, and concentrated on the necessity of ensuring easy transport between London and important seaports in time of war. The suggested plan, he said, was to transfer traffic to west-coast ports in such an emergency, but no steps were being taken to improve the routes.

He mentioned the refusal to build a suitable bridge over the River Tamar as a great obstacle.

A.R.O. New East Lancs Committee.

At the recent annual meeting of the East Lancashire Area of A.R.O. the following were appointed as area committee for the coming year:-Mr. Reginald Hindley (Manchester), Mr. W. Tweedale (Rochdale), Mr. D. W. Winterbottom (Mossley), Mr. H. Proctor (Hyde), Mr. W. Lloyd (Trafford Park), Mr. W. J. Allen (Trafford Park), Mr. A. Allen" (Stalybridge), Mr. J. Lord (Bacup), Mr. E. Knowles (Bolton), Mr. C. H. Hodldnson (Atherton), Mr. F. Bennett (Altrincham), Mr. J. W. Pearson B26 (Oldham), Mr. R. P. Whipp (Accrington), and Mr. J. W. Beresford (Buxton) The committee chairman and other officials will be elected at the first committee meeting. Mr, B, Winterbottom continues as area secretary.

Association's New Address.

The address of the Ballast, Sand and Allied Trades Association is now as follows:-468, Chiswick High Road, London, W.4. (Telephone-Chiswick 3110.) The sec. is Mr. E. V. Smith. A.R.O. INSURANCE SCHEME LAUNCHED.

It is announced that the A.R.O. special insurance scheme has now been launched: a booklet containing full information on the scheme is now in the hands of every member. The three main items of insurance required by road operators-namely, vehicle, goods in transit, and workmen's compensation, are all provided for, whilst additional facilities, such as life, premises, fire and superannuation are available.

The scheme is of a mutual charactei and makes possible substantial premium-reductions year by year to those who take advantage of it.

C.M.U.A. Brighton Area Secretary.

Mr. Walter Champ, F.C.A., A.C.I.S., has been appointed honorary secretary of the Brighton and District area of the C.M.U.A. Messrs. A. J. Brown, F. H. Gorton, H. Grover, A. J. Plaister, W. G. Miller, L. Pratt and P. J. L. Taylor have been appointed to the committee.

• Lords to Hear B.R.F.

The British Road Federation is to give evidence before the House of Lords Select Committee on the Prevention of Road Accidents, next Tuesday morn ing. May 3. The witnesses for the Federation will be as follow:-The Rt. Hon. Earl Howe, Mr. R. Gresham Cooke, Mr. A. E. Cockerton, Mr. F. G. Bristow and Mr. R. W. Sewill (representing the commercial-vehicle side); and Mr. C. D. Stanley (representing the public service vehicle side).
