"The cheque's in the post" has entered the language as a universally understood phrase of those who pay debts late (and one of the world's greatest lies) but there are many imaginative variants on the theme.
The Better Payment Practice Campaign website lists the top 10 excuses for nonpayment (see below) but it adds a few extra ones recorded by credit controllers telephoning firms who owe them money.
These include the chequebook has been destroyed in a flood"; "I do not speak English"; not now, it's the office party-; the owner's been buried with his chequebook", and "we're in the middle of an armed robbery"
