Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Following our Euro-4 group test, (see page 42) all participating manufacturers were invited to make a response. Here's what MAN and Volvo had to say...

-WE HAVE witnessed intense debate between competing technologies. MAN-ERF has maintained two critical points throughout; firstly, that it has both technologies tested in vast quantities, so we are fully informed in bringing EGR to the market and. secondly. the D20 is the finest heavy truck engine available and no competing engine (either SCR or EGR) can match its economy and performance.

"We know this is the case through many demonstrations. However, we cannot expect the industry to accept it without clear and credible independent evidence and we would like to thank Commercial Motor for delivering this vital test."

Dave Cussans Sales& marketing director,

i1AM-ERFUK "VOLVO entered its two demonstration vehicles, which met the Test criteria for engine power output, as well as the latest Furo-4 regulations (Directive 200578B).

'Roth vehicles were standard production models and each had won two leading fleet operator's long-term fuel trials, with consumption in excess of 8.5 and 9.0 mpg for the F1-15X2 and FM4X2 respectively, against a mix of competitive vehicles.

Volvo is surprised that similar results were not repeated and that there was a wide spread of final fuel figures, although Volvo acknowledges that the CM 1.000 mile route includes some arduous sections and that the vehicles were running at higher GVWs, Adblue consumption, however, remained within the predicted levels.
