Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Can anyone explain to me why diesel is cheaper to buy at the pumps than from my regular fuel supplier? I've read in Commercial Motor for two weeks running that hauliers are angry that they are paying more for their diesel than "Joe Public" who is just filling up his Mondeo.

What I want to know is why and how can they get away with it? My fuel suppliers aren't giving me any answers. They keep telling me that they are not ripping me off and that it's more complicated than it seems.

But as far as I'm concerned, if you buy in bulk you're entitled to a better price. As usual, it seems that the usual rules don't apply if you're a haulier.

Can someone explain?

G Pritchard, Salisbury.

• An interesting question, Mr Pritchard; if you'd care to turn to our news pages you'll find the explanation—Ed.
