• British MEP Caroline Jackson has persuaded the European Parliament to apply Euro-2 diesel exhaust standards to vans as well as larger commercial vehicles From October 1997.
The decision runs against the European Commission's proposal last year that diesel vans should be subject to less stringent limits on particlates.
The Parliament has the power to scrap Commission proposals if no compromise solution can be found.
