Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by John Kendall • All-independent suspension, semi-forward control and revised engines feature in the latest Toyota Hiace, launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The new van retains a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 2,800kg but is taller, lower and wider than its predecessor with a high-roof option giving a body volume of 7.0m3.

The standard roof gives an interior height of 1.42m (up from 1.34m in the old model) although the new van is only 20mm taller. Its body volume is a claimed 6.0m3.

Independent rear suspension has allowed the floor to be lowered: the loadbed is 2.56m long with 1.23m between the wheel arches—up from 1.09m in the old model.

The new turbo-diesel option offers a 14% boost in power and 39% increase in torque over the naturally aspirated model. Fivespeed synchromesh gearboxes are standard. A fourchannel, three sensor antilock brake system is an option on the ventilated front discs/rear drum braking system which has a load sensing valve are standard.

The Hiace is unique among rear-wheel-drive vans in offering all-round independent suspension. At the rear compact semitrailing arms and coil springs contribute to the lower floor height.

The semi-forward-control design offers better impact protection to vehicle occupants. Side impact beams are used in the doors and the A, B and C pillars are all reinforced. Seatbelt pre-tensioners are standard on the driver and nearside passenger seats; driver and passenger airbags are optional.

Standard equipment includes power assisted steering, clock and cigarette lighter. Options include a second sliding side door, ABS, engine immobiliser, tilt adjustable steering wheel, electric windows, rear demister and wiper, central locking and a radio. The Hiace goes on sale in November.
