Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A NEW hydraulically operated lorry

ti crane is available from G. Hunter (London), Ltd., Gumley Road, Grays, Essex.

It is the Steinbock type LK2, and is designed for mounting on a lorry between the driver's cab and the body being suitable for vehicles with capacities of 3.5 tons and upwards.

Because it is centrally mounted, the crane is equally effective on each side of the lorry and the crane can be controlled from either side of the vehicle.

The telescopic jib can be extended and

retracted by up to 5 ft. II in. to facilitate the placing of goods. Two hooks fitted on an adjustable chain make it possible to load the whole floor area of the vehicle.

A slewing arc of about 200° is possible, and the lowest position of the load hook with a fully extended chain is about 3 ft. below ground level. A wide range of accessories is available to load difficult materials including such things as logs, box pallets. concrete pipes, concrete blocks and slabs.

Better Rubbing Down

AN alternative to wet-and-dry paper for rubbing down is offered by a new product obtainable from Marketing Results, Ltd., 3 Vere Street, London, W.I. The product is known as the Mastiff block and is an abrasive wafer bonded to a hand-size cork block.

The wafer is formed by bonding together particles of silicon carbide to form very small rod-shaped particles. These in turn are bonded together to form an irregular matrix about 0.I-in. deep. The spaces between the carbide particles provide a reservoir for the water used in rubbing down and prevent clogging. Except when used on fresh paint or cellulose, no lubricant is required.

The blocks (measuring 3.75 in. by 2.5 in.) cost 12s. 64. each and one block is said to have the same life as 50 full-size sheets of abrasive paper. This means that there is a considerable saving in cost, but .an additional advantage is that after the initial sharpness is rubbed off, the rate of cut is standard for the life of the block.

Mastiff blocks are made in grit sizes corresponding to wet-and-dry from 60 to 500. It is recommended that if a rate n30 of cut consistent with the first few rubs of a sheet of wet-and-dry are required, a grade of Mastiff slightly coarser than the grade of paper used should be specified.

Short-core Valves.

THE first short-core tyre valve to be made in the U.K. is now being manufactured by Bridgeport Brass, Ltd., Lisburn, Northern Ireland. The shortcore valve, although new in quantity to this country, has held a large percentage of the American market for over 30 years. It is completely interchangeable with standard British, European and American tyre valves.

A complete range of valves for both tubed arid tubeless tyres are being produced, the principal feature being the total enclosure of the spring in the integral core. Advantages claimed for the thin bullet shaped unit include complete testing during manufacture. exclusion of dirt from working parts, and ease of insertion in the valve mouth.

In addition to the standard core, several combinations of springs and sealing materials are available to meet severe operating requirements. Output is expected to grow continuously. over the next few years as the short-core valve becomes increasingly popular in Northern European markets.

Replacing Woodscrews

THE range of fasteners made by Avd Ltd., has been .extended by the inti duction of the Avdel Grovit. This 1 been developed principally for wot working and will replace woodscrel nails, pins, self-tapping screws and otl fasteners.

Grovits are manufactured in cadmit plated steel or aluminium alloy in range of sizes and head forms. They supplied magazine loaded for rat insertion in the placing tool, thus avo ing the usual loss when handling sm components.

In use, the operator inserts the Gra into a pre-formed hole and on actuati the placing tool, causes the withdrav of a mandrel through the tapered bore the Grovit. This forces the shank, w annular locking grooves, to be expand into the . work and gives a permanen locked high strength fastening.
