WHAT is the present position &air/ ceming the Regional Fares Committees? This question has lately been passing through the minds of many coach operators, for nothing has bees heard, for some time, of the activities of the committees.

The Commercial Motor has, however, obtained official statements from the leading officials of most of the committees, who report that their organizations are, still hi existence and are prepared to operate during the forthcoming winter if required to do so.

Reports have been obtained from Mr. A, Boynton, chairman of the Central Fares Committee and convener of No.. 1 Regional Committee ; Mr. A. E. Cannon, convener of No. 2 Committee ; Mr. H. R. Lapper, convener of No. 4 Committee; Mr. 0. C. Power, convener of No. 5 Committee ; and Mr. L. E. Richards, convener of No. 6 Committee.

Mr. Cannon suggests that, "to a large extent, fares have, more or less, settled down to a reasonable level and possibly there will not be so much work for the Fares Committee to do in the future as there has been in the past."

A peculiar position obtains in connection with No. 4 Regional Committee. The principal long-distance services in that Regional Area are now operating under the "Cheltenham " co-ordination scheme of Associated Motorways, Mr. Lapper informs us that, " in con-' nection with this scheme of co-ordination, the whole question of fares was, of course, closely examined and, after many discussions, complete agreement has been reached with all the railway companies and stage-carriage operators concerned. Subject to the necessity of adjustment of a few specific fares, the whole position of fares in the northWest regional area has now been " It is not, tluerefore," he continues, "anticipated that much will be required in future of the Regional Fares Committee, although it will remain in existence in order to deal with matters that may arise domestic to the No. 4 Regional Area, or matters which require the co-operation of the committees of the respective regional areas."
