THE following are reports received from provincial correspondents concerning the activities of the Area Conciliation Boards :—

Conciliation Board Formed in the South.West.

A Devon and Cornwall Joint Conciliation Board, consisting of 24 members, has now been brought into being. Twelve representatives were appointed by the Road Haulage Association and the remainder by the Transport and General Workers Union. Mr. K. G. Foster, on the employers' side, has been appointed joint chairman with Mr. J. J. Richards, for the employees, whilst Mr. Humphrey Cooke and Mr. W. Rut-ma's have been appointed joint secretaries and treasurers on the employers' and employees' sides respectively.

The Board has unanimously resolved to make application to the National_ Board to be recognized as an independent authority responsible only to the National Board, instead of being a sub-board, as suggested, operating under a Board, sitting at Bristol, on behalf of the whole of the Western• Traffic Area.

At the Board's first meeting at Plymouth it was unanimously decided to recommend the adoption of a 60-mile radius from the base as the definition of long-distance and trunk roadhaulage services.

A sub-committee was formed, consisting of four representatives from each side, as well as the joint secretaries, ex-officio, to report to the next meeting of the Area Board on the question of grading wages in Devon and Cornwall.

Hope for Yorkshire Conciliation Agreement.

At its meeting, in Leeds, on Monday, the Yorkshire Area Joint Conciliation Board appointed a sub-committee to consider wages grading in the Yorkshire Traffic Area, and the definition of longdistance and trunk services. The duty of the sub-committee will be to pro

duce a plan for submission to the Area Board.

The members of the sub-committee

are: -aEmployers' representatives:. Messrs. A. H. Butterwick, F. Pickering, II. Goodwin, G. E. Gilbey, C. Holdsworth, and If. J. Sharpley. Employees' representatives Messrs. C. Fitzgerald, M. Copeland, J. Shee, A. C. Francis, j. Henson, and Alderman F. Thraves. The joint secretaries of the Yorkshire Area Board, Mr. Harry Clarke (employers' panel), and Mr. J. Bowman (employees' panel) are ex-officio members of the sub-corrimit Lee.

As the reports of the Area Boards have to be submitted to the National Board by November 12, the sub-committee is to commence business as quickly as poSsible, and the hope is expressed that, when it has formulated its recommendations, they will be accepted without delay by the Area Board. Out Yorkshire correspondent understands' that, at Monday's meeting there was an atmosphere which augurs favourably for future negotiations.
