Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Although the Euro-4 deadline is less than a year away, truck manufacturers like DaimlerChrysler and Scania have already unveiled their Euro-4 diesels well in advance. The oil companies have also joined in: 08 says its latest fully-synthetic T 900 high-performance engine oil is specifically intended for Euro-4 diesels, with its low sulphated ash, phosphorous and sulphur content. 08 says this "gives excellent protection against bore polishing and cam wear; also rapid lubrication on cold-starling and outstanding high temperature durability."

As most Euro-4 engines will inevitably use some form of exhaust after-treatment, 08 reports that 1900 has been specially developed to avoid damage to catalytic after-treatment systems (SCR), and to cut debris build-up in diesel particulate filters.

Superfleet satisfies Swedes

Gulfs Superfleet Supreme 15w40 lubricant has gained Volvo's VDS-3 lubricant approval. As a result,

fleets running the latest-generation Volvo trucks using Superfleet Supreme will be able to satisfy the manufacturer's demand that they use a VDS-3 product in order to comply with warranty conditions. Ifs a high-performance long-drain 15w40 multi-grade lubricant for high-output turbo-charged diesels and mixed fleet operations. It's also helps sustain engine durability where exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is used.

Scania has also confirmed that Gulfs Supertieet ELD 10w40 is listed in its workshop manual under Scania LDF requirements. Superfleet ELD 10w40 is a semi-synthetic extra long-drain SHPD oil for use in low-emission, heavy-duty diesel engines. It has already received MAN plus MTU approval from DaimlerChrysler, as well as meeting the performance requirements of ACEA E4, MAN3277, MB228.5 and MTU Type 3.

Fuchs' synthetic for Euro-2

Fuchs Lubricants (UK) has launched two new engre oils for light and heavy diesels. Titan Uni Diesel SAE 15W-4-10 is a specially-formulated blend designed for both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged diesels. It maintains performance even under the most severe operating conditions thanks to what Fuchs describes as "shear stable viscosity modifiers". Deposits on cylinder-heads, pistons, valves and turbochargers do not affect performance either. Trtan Uni protects against bore polishing and sludging and is compatible with all gaskets and seals and catalytic converters. Titan Syn Diesel SAE 10W-40 is a full synthetic providing all-year protection, low oil consumption and minimum cold start wear. Even with extended oil-change intervals, it retains its viscosity characteristics compared to a standard viscosity grade. Fuchs recommends its Titan Syn for tricks with Euro-2 engines.

BP keeps track with fleet reporter

BP European Fleet Services has enhanced its existing intemet-based fleet management system for BP fuel card customers with the launch of FleetReporter. This easy-to-use reporting system operates alongside BP's AccountManager tool, enabling car, van and truck fleet operators to access detailed analysis of their fuel management process via the Web.

FleetReporter provides a broad range of reports that imitate and analyse key vehicle data, allowing better monitoring and control of fuel consumption and identifying card misuse. FleetReporter offers on-line reports that can be swiftly downloaded and operators using BP Plus and BP Agency fuel cards can utilise the FleetReporter tool through BP's AccountManager service.

Smartdiesel on the net

Despite having been in business for little more than nine months, Ipswich-based smartdiesel says it's already signed up over 1,000 operators to its intemet-based fuel card system. Whatever the size of fleet, the company runs a week-by-week single-price structure, whereby customers are charged the same price. You can even apply for a card online. The smartdiesel card operates in partnership with the UK Fuels diesel bunkering network and allows hauliers to track all card transactions on-line as well as to receive bills via e-mail (although hardcopy transactions are also available). Other smartdiesel features include the latest OSS1 microchip technology on its fuel cards, providing exile security through selected volume and day/time restrictions, and an operator loyalty scheme. Avisit to the site (www.smartdiesel.co.uk) also brings up a useful map highlighting bunkering sites region-by-region.
