'HE P&O drivers at Birmingham have refused to accept a 10 ler cent pay increase (CM last week).
They take the view that whereas government sanctions may ,e "empty threats" against the majority of small haulage ompanies, they are of major significance to the worldwide perations of the P & 0 group.
The drivers said this week they realised that the present ripasse is outside the control of management and men in West lidlands Roadways, the P & 0 company in Birmingham and, iterefore, they resumed work on Tuesday without any icrease in pay.
They have a clear understanding with P & 0 management tat as soon as a pattern of wage settlements emerges in the idustry, which might relax the government guidelines, egotiations will be opened up and any settlement resulting .om these negotiations will be retrospective to September 1, )77.
