MOST wholesale traders are re.1.11.ported to be fairly active, which means that there is a fair amount of haulage business generally in the large towns. The leather market, which has been improving for some weeks, is now steady. The beet crop in most areas is reported to be from 10 to 20 per cent. greater than last year, which means a corresponding increase in haulage business.

North-east Coast.

A match factory is to be established at West Hartlepool. Messrs. W. D. Allison, of Whitburn, near Sunderland, are to build 48 houses on the Marsden housing site for South Shields Rural District Council.

Yorkshire.

Bradford manufacturers are better employed than for some time past. Hosiery yarn contracts are being taken up satisfactorily. Scarborough Corporation is to begin work on an extension of the North Bay promenade. The work is estimated to cost over 130,000. Bridlingtou Town Council has under consideration a scheme for sea-front development which will cost in all about 180,000.

R. Charlesworth, Ltd., 145, Holme Lane, Hillsborough, Sheffield, is to erect 362 houses on Woodthorpe Estate, Sheffield, for Sheffield Town Council. The direct labour department of Sheffield Corporation is to carry out extensions of the City General Hospital, Sheffield, at a cost of 151,547. The 288 houses on the Shiregreen Estate, Sheffield, are to be built by M. J. Gleeson Ltd., 822, Chesterfield Road. Sheffield, and W. J. Simms, Sons and Cooke, Ltd., of 3, Weekday Cross, Nottingham, and 184 houses on the Slairegreen Estate by W. Malthouse, Ltd., Rosend ale Road, Sheffield.

H. Cooper and Son, Ltd., Railway Works, Conisborough, is to carry out building operations for the South-west Yorkshire Joint Board for Mental Defectives, St Catherines, Doncaster. j. Parr and Sons, Hoyland, is to erect 30 houses for Hoyland Urban District Council. Messrs. Potts, of Norton-onTees, are to build 32 houses for Pickering Urban District Council.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

A pea-canning factory has been established in South-west Lancashire, and guarantees have been obtained from local agriculturists that at least 250 acres of peas will be sown next summer. The canning of other vegetables is contemplated. Manchester cotton factories are in receipt of increasing orders for deliveries throughout the country, as the home trade desires to replenish stocks. Some of the silk factories in Macclesfield and district are busy.

Seventy-five dwellings are to be built at Trowbridge Street by Messrs. J. Lewis, 13a, Laurel Road, Fairfield, Liverpool, for the Liverpool Corporation. On the Huyton Farm Estate 252 houses and 34 flats are to be built by Middleton and Co. (Blackpool), Ltd., Bank Street Sidings, Blackpool, for Liverpool Corporation. Midlands.

The general report from Nottingham, Leicester and district is quite good. Unemployment is falling and the autumn season for underwear has begun briskly. Moreover, as the stocks of retailers and wholesalers are small there is a rush for delivery. Makers of laces are also well employed. The hosiery trade in Leicester is busy. Manufacturers of rayon wear are active. A German firm, which began production on the outskirts of Leicester with machinery and plant brought over from Germany in February, has placed orders for machinery which will enable the output to he doubled.

There is a better tone in the boot and shoe business than has been the case for some time past. Most firms are working full time and several are on overtime. W. M. Sharp and Son, Ltd., East Short Street, Leicester, is to carry out extensions and additions to the bus garage, Abbey Park Road, for Leicester Town Council.

An elementary school, costing £12,287, is to be erected in Imperial Avenue. Leicester, by Messrs. G. Gurney and Son, 913, Vulcan Street, Leicester. Messrs. Dickinson and Holford, Walsall, are to build 34 houses on a site at the corner of Ingrain Road and Green Rock Lane, for Walsall Town Council.

Wales.

An old factory at Barry is to be reopened as an enamelled-hollowware factory. Messrs. T. E. F. Whither, 2, Harland Place, Norton-on-Tees, are to build a school in Gors Road, Swansea,

for the town council. A further 100 houses are to be erected on the Mayhill Estate for Swansea Corporation. The builders are Messrs. L. H. Samuel, Landore Yard, Landore, Swansea.

East Anglia.

Depwade (Norfolk) Rural District Council has accepted tenders for building 104 houses at a cost of 130,011. Structural Contractors, Ltd., London, secured contracts for 64 houses, and the Universal Housing Co., of Rickmansworth, is to put up 10, the rest going to local contractors.

London and Home Counties.

Sixteen new factories have been brought into operation on the Slough Trading Estate since the beginning of the year, producing articles such as confectionery, perfumery, ribbons, margarine, mineral waters and electric lamps. The toy factory to which reference was made some months ago as being established in Aylesbury is now busy, and anticipates being even busier in prospect of the Christmas trade. Thirty-nine houses are to be built on the Amersham Road Housing Estate for the urban district council. The builder is Cain and Co.. 378, Hanworth Road, Hounslow. Additions are to be made to the t urses' home at the Mental Hospital, Brentwood, for Essex County Council. Messrs. T. J. Bailey, of Chelmsford, are to carry out extensions at the County Hall, Chelmsford, for Essex County Council at a cost of 121,745. Messrs. E. A. Thorne and Son, 1-2, Rosehill Parade, Sutton, Surrey, are to erect sick-staff quarters and an operat-, ing block at King George V Sanatorium, Godalming, Surrey, for the London County Council. S. Shaw, Ltd., 86, Glasshouse Street, London, W., is to build 26 cottages at the Marsh Lane site, Great Stanmore, for Hendon Rural District Council.

Seventy dwellings are to be erected on the Wales Farm Road site. Acton, for the town council. The builders are Messrs. Road and Son, East Lane, Wembley.
