AThe regulation to which you refer is the
one which will make it an offence (to be included in the totting up system leading to disqualification) for the driver of an "abnormal" vehicle to cross an automatic-barrier level crossing without first obtaining permission to do so by telephone. A new sign is being introduced to make this requirement clear. (CM September 26, page 48).
An "abnormal" vehicle in this context is a motor vehicle, with or without trailer, more than 55ft long or 9ft 6in. wide, or weighing more than 32 tons, inclusive of load in each case, or one incapable of travelling over the crossing at more than 5 mph.
If there is a sign near the level crossing saying that trains do not normally travel over the crossing during certain periods of the day and if during that time the driver, after waiting two minutes, receives no reply to his telephone call, he may proceed.
