• It is possible that the Essex centre of the Lorry Driver of the Year competition will not function in 1970.

This was disclosed by Mr. E. Barber, the centre secretary, at the executive committee meeting of the competition on Tuesday. Last year, the centre attracted 113 competitors. Mr. .Barber pointed out that the reason for the doubt was the lack of committee support; efforts were now being made to recruit a suitable committee in the area.

The secretary reported that there was a possibility that new centres would be estab lished at Nottingham and the Isle of Man. If the Essex centre survives, this will bring the total of next year's competitions to 38.

The committee is to approach the Ministry of Transport for clarification on whether or not the competition will be considered part of the working week when the new drivers' hours are introduced on March 1 1970. Mr.

J. Grierson, transport manager, BOC Ltd., Glasgow. Ald. A. Pedley of Leeds. Mr. G. Morgan of Birmingham, and Mr. B. Gray, training officer, HTS, were appointed to the panel of national stewards for 1970.
