• The Post Office, following experience with a battery-electric van used for parcels delivery and sorting in Leicester, has taken delivery of five electric parcels delivery vans for extensive operational trials.
The vehicles, built by Crompton Leyland Electricars of Tredegar, Mon., are to operate in London, Aldershot, Gloucester, Cardiff and Belfast on routes specially selected to test their performance. The evaluation trials, expected to take up to a year to complete, will be aimed particularly at discovering whether battery-electrics could replace conventional 240 cu.ft. diesel vans used for delivery and en-route sorting of parcels.
Crompton Leyland hopes that batteryelectrics will compare favourably with diesel vans on routes of up to 30 miles; widespread adoption would, the company feels, be a significant step in cutting air pollution and noise.
