Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE FORD Connect could arguably be seen as the catalyst for the latest generation of small-yet-robust and functional small vans.

Making its debut back in 2001, it created an immediate impact in terms of performance and build, causing its rivals in the compact van sector to appear a little lightweight.

Eight years on and still performing strongly in terms of sales (in relative terms) and capability, the vehicle receives a facelift to stave off time and the arrival of newer competition.

Volkswagen's Caddy has established itself as a thorn in the Connect's side, while the past year has also seen the arrival of Citroen's enlarged Berlingo and Renault's Kangoo. Game on, then. On the outside, the Ford gets a new face, based on the 'Kinetic' styling applied to the marque's passenger cars, while new rear lights and side mouldings make up the exterior package.

Inside it keeps its passenger influence by lifting the S Max dashboard and dropping it in, to great effect — it looks stylish and is easy to navigate, helping to retain a Connect strength.

This addition also allows for the fitment of (optional) sat-nay for the first time, while ESP and hill launch assist are now fitted as standard.

Add to this new, comfortable seats and an updated colour scheme, and the interior retains its freshness.

What is also evident is the high level of build quality, particularly the switches and dials, which operate crisply and with precision.

And this translates out on the road, with the Connect operating as a precision tool, responding to driver input without delay. The steering is excellent, as is the suspension, which allows you to hustle it through corners whether empty or laden.

We would recommend speccing a six-speed gearbox for the engine in the top power rating (109hp, the other two being 74 and 89hp) in order to help fuel economy, among other things.

The load area is well designed and easily accessible, allowing for a payload of up to 843kg on the SWB and 902kg on the LWB, with load volume at 3.4m3 and 4.4m3 respectively. •
