chiefs? from our political correspondent

• Pay rises of 60 per cent for State transport chiefs were recommended by the Prices and Incomes Board in a report to the Government on Tuesday.

The PIB proposed that salaries of the chairmen of London Transport Board, the National Freight Corporation and the National Bus Company should be increased from £11,000 to £13.000 now, and up to £17,000 over the next two years.

In addition to the higher pay for chairmen and deputy chairmen, rises are proposed for other board members, starting with a 10 per cent increase next month.

The Board says that both pay and pensions of board members of nationalized industries are substantially lower than those of private industry.

The Government is now studying the report, which is meeting with strong resentment inside the Parliamentary Labour Party and the trade unions, and will make a statement on its attitude to it as soon as possible.
