new forward-control four-wheeler ded for 16 tons solo and available as a ie unit for 28 or 30 tons gross cornon weight has been introduced by Scaabis. Until now the Swedish company had no forward-control model in this it class and the new design—the --will be offered to British operators the next six months.

;chanically, the LB80 is based on the normal-control chassis having the D8, bhp SAE gross (157 bhp net DIN) natuaspirated diesel or the DS8 turbocharged )n of the 08 which gives 207 bhp SAE (202 bhp net DIN). In both cases maxiengine speed is 2,400 rpm and maxigross torques (SAE) are 406 lb.ft. and lb.ft. respectively at 1,200 rpm. Either ie can normally be specified but the 30 ton tractive unit will be sold only with the DS8.

The standard transmission is the G500 five-speed synchromesh gearbox, while the G572 10-speed box the same unit with the addition of an air-operated two-speed planetary splitter section—is an option. An airoperated differential lock can be incorporated in the single-reduction rear axle.

While the major components follow previous Scania practice, the cab is completely new. It follows the general lines and standard of construction of the unit used on the Scania 110 introduced about a year ago for gross weights of 32 tons and above. The cab tilts forward 60deg for full access to the engine, this operation being carried out using a hydraulic ram and pump system. Like the cab on the 110, the new unit has had to pass the severe Swedish standards for strength which include impact and load tests. It also has a very high standard of interior trim and fittings. A sprung driving seat is standard; it has the normal fore-and-aft and height adjustment, plus adjustable seat and back rest angles.

There is a thermostatically controlled heater /defroster unit and although the top of the engine is above the cab floor line, the engine cover takes up little cab space. Tilting the cab is unnecessary for daily checks; raising the hinged front grille allows the engine oil and water levels to be checked and also gives access to the wiper and heater motors and other components.

Power steering is standard on the Scania L880 and the air-pressure braking system has separate circuits for the front and rear axles with spring brake units for parking.

Four wheelbases are listed, The longest is 5.0m (16ft 4.5in.) which allows for platform lengths up to 7m (22ft 11in.), with the next longest 3.8m 112ft 5in.)—both of these will be suitable for 16 tons in the UK. The shortest wheelbase rigid is a 3.4m (10ft 11.5in.) chassis which will be limited to 15 tons in this country because the wheelbase is less than 12ft. Tractive unit wheelbase is 3.05m (10ft).
