A Run on the Garrett Six-tonner, which Embodies Many Interesting Features.

W E. were recently invited by Richard W W Garrett. and &AS, Ltd., Leisten Works, Leiston, to take a short trial run on their latest product from a works which has been the progenitor of so many successful mechanical appliances.

On our arrival at Leiston we were greeted by Mr. V. i.-Garrett, M.A., and proceeded to viewthe wagon, which we found to be an undertype of most pleasing design, both from the points. of view of appearance and engineering. In its general outline the wagonresembies the two. undertypes with which most are familiar, but it embodies many important differences in its detail construction which mark it as a milestone in steamwagon development.

As will be seen in cur illustrations, the

is of the vertical cylindrical watertube type, and, in the model which will shortly be in production, this has a large coveT plate at one side, which can be removed in order to give free accessto all the tubes, the inner shell, and the fine system ; at the opposite side to this inspection door is a, smaller one, through which the tubes may be expanded if necessary. A superheater, feed-water heater, and punap are also incorporated. The engine is a two-cylindered horizontal double-acting type, with piston valves and Joy valve gear, which, together with the countershaft and pomp assembly, forms a unit supported at three points a-ad isolated from any tor•

sional stremes which might possibly be imposed by slight flexing-of -the pressed steel deep. channel-section frame; the whole of. the mechanism in this unit, which includes the two-speed gear and differential, is in an oiltight casing. One particularlyinteresting feature is that the crankshaft, countersbaft, and all wheels are carried by Timken taper roller hearings. Hand and foot-operated brakes of the internal -expanding type ac'on largo drum" on the rear wheels.

The -trial route included Leiston, $axmundham, Frisian, and Aldeburgh, returning via Aldringham-----a total distance of about 211 miles, which was covered_ at an average speed Of 151 m.p.h. The wagon has. been designed for high average speeds, and can gradients of I in 8 without difficulty. It proved very well sprung and, with its s-ton load and several passengers, surmounted fairly -:-.teep inclines at a surprising Pace.
