Jack Brown, managing director of Atlas Express Ltd and chairman of the Road Haulage Association's Vehicle Security Committee, was taken aback when he received a standing ovation after a two-hour lecture to the police crime convention officers' course at Stafford. He knew his efforts to prevent lorry thefts were appreciated, but this was too much.
What he did not realise was that he was being honoured for his hundreth lecture in 15 years, during which he had not missed a course. He was also presented with a new wider version of the Home Office Crime Prevention Centre's tie to replace the bootlace that he was wearing.
His score of lectures is now 103 not out.
