The Traffic Commissioners for the Northern Scotland Area have, according to their latest Gazette (No. 18), granted a number of licences, notably to the Highland Transport Co.,, Ltd., for stage-carriage services, various other operators being granted chiefly excursion and tour licences. W. Alexander and Sons, Ltd., has been granted several short-period licences and a backing.

According to Gazette No. 15, when the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners sit at Harrogate, there will be many objections or representations in connection with applications for services, the L.N.E. Railway Co., the L.M.S. Railway Co., West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., and :United Automobile Services, Ltd., being prominent. Only one decision is announced in this Gazette.

According to Gazette No. 17 of the West Midland Traffic Commissioners, the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., has been granted a number of licences in respect of local services, but, otherwise, nothing of par ticular note is included. Numerous applications for licences to operate tours have been received.

In Gazette No. of the East Midland Traffic Commissioners it is announced that Greyhound Motors, Ltd., of Bristol, has been refused permission to run a Bristol-Northampton service so far as the route lies in the East Midland Area. Black and White Motorways, Ltd.. Cheltenham, has been granted a licence far a CheltenhamLeicester service. The application for a licence for a service from Leicester to Nottingham was, however, refused. Several concerns have withdrawn applications, notably the Sheffield Corporation, L.M.S. and L.N.E.R. Joint Omnibus Committee, which had ortiginally sought permission to operate an express service between Sheffield and Matlock Bath.

Applications for stage carriage licences will be the chief concern of the Eastern Traffic Commissioners when they sit at Sudbury. Gazette No. 18 for that area announces that the Westcliff Motor Services, Ltd., has been granted licences for numerous local services.

Gazette No. 15 of the Traffic Commissioners for the South Walee Area is only a small publication and lists no B37 granted licences. Stage-carriage services will be the chief matter for consideration when the Commissioners meet at Aberayron and Newport.

Gazette No. 17 of the Traffic Commissioners for the Western Area shows that licences have been granted to the Devon General Omnibus and Touring Co., Ltd., Western National Omnibus Co., Ltd., Plymouth Corporation, and the Great Western Railway Co., as well as to other local concerns. The Western National Co. has been granted ' the largest number of licences, these being in respect of stage-carriage services.

Many licences have been granted by the Southern Traffic Commissioners and a fairly large portion of their Gazette No. 18 is devoted to this matter. The name of the Wilts and Dorset Motor Services, *Ltd., figures prominently, whilst this concern has been refused several applications in respect of local stage-carriage services.

A feature of the current sitting, in London, of the South-Eastern Traffic Commissioners is the large number of objectors to the granting of licences. Gazette No. 19 for that area shows the Southern Railway Co., IlaidStone and District Motor Services, Ltd., and the East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., to be amongst the well-known private objectors, whilst municipal opposition is forthcoming from Brighton, Ramsgate, Bexhill, Eastbourne, etc. Licences are sought for services from London, Weymouth, Bournemouth, Hastings, Littlehampton, Ramsgate and other popular seaside resorts. Amongst the applicants are the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society, Ltd., the Golden West Line, Ltd., and the Eastern National Omnibus Co., Ltd. The names of the East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., and the Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., are well to the fore in the section of the Gazette devoted to applications granted.

According to Gazette No. 19 of the Metropolitan Traffic Commissioner, the L.G.O. Co., Ltd., has received permission to operate numerous services, including those from London to Sevenoaks, Newlands Corner, Windsor, Whipsuede, Tring, etc., all these being popular spots on the outskirts of the metropolis. The names of the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., and the Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., also appear frequently.
